South of Santa Cruz, Soquel, lies inland from Capitola just east Hwy 1. Soquel Village still maintains much of the look and feel of the pioneer mill town founded by John Daubenbiss and John Hames in 1846. Some of the cut original redwoods where converted into the vineyard pickets and purchased by the Gallo Family for their vineyards. Phillip and John Bargetto, sons of an Italian winemaker who immigrated to America in 1887, established Bargetto Winery shortly after Prohibition. Soquel is now home to several additional wineries including Soquel Vineyards and Hunter Hill Vineyards.

The town of Soquel itself has grown into a larger community, extending north of the village into grassy farmlands and family-oriented neighborhoods. Soquel offers a great option for weekday Silicon Valley commuters who avoid traffic and stress by driving Old San Jose Road to where it meets Hwy-17. On weekends, the picnic area inside Anna Jean Cummings County Park is filled with families, school teams playing soccer and people running and biking. Homes around the park tend towards large front and backyards and there are often children out playing basketball and riding bikes in the neighborhood streets.
